History of Silver Jewelry

The history of silver jewelry dates back to the ancient times. It is said to be discovered right about after the time that copper and gold were found. In Egypt, the people said gold was the ultimate metal, but silver was in at a very close second. Both were considered to be precious metals. Not only was silver used for jewelry, but as ornaments for rich households.

In researching, the history of silver jewelry is documented as far back as 5000 BC. There were already methods in place detailing how to separate gold and silver. Both gold and silver were taken or mined from the earth and was bonded to lead.

Back in the Bronze Age silver and gold were being taken from the mines. This was a grueling job and not a very good one health wise. Many of the miners were dying at a rapid rate. The reason for such a high death count was due to lead poisoning. The lead is mixed in with the silver and gold being mined. Many of the workers with this lead for years not realizing what it was doing to their health. After the cause of death was figured out the men did not want to risk their lives. At this point they made slaves do the mining because silver jewelry was still in very high demand.

At around the year 500bc a very large mine full of sliver was found in Greece. The earnings from this mine are what founded the first navy in Athens. Athens at this point having a navy became a very powerful city thanks to the worth of silver and the extreme popularity of the luxurious silver jewelry.

Southern Spain also had a large set of silver mines. The money earned from these mines was used to pay money the Romans had demanded. The rest of the earnings or profits were used by the Romans to take over more people and land.

Today, the world's largest suppliers of silver are USA, Argentina, Canada and Mexico amongst a few others.

They are able to supply a lot of silver to jewelers wishing to create beautiful silver jewelry pieces. Some of the most popular silver jewelry pieces throughout history were necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. This still remains true to this very day. People still love sporting classy silver jewelry because of the luxurious feel to it and the sexy look it helps you achieve.
